How to Repair an Overhead Garage Door

Metal tracks
The first step is to check the metal tracks that are inside of the garage. You will also need to look at the mounting brackets that are going to hold the tracks to the walls. Basically, if they are loose, then you are going to need to tighten the bolts and screws at the brackets to help the garage door to work better. You can examine the tracks for any dents, flat spots, or crimps inside of them. If you have found any spots that are damaged, then you can pound them out with a hammer or a rubber mallet. If the damage is very bad, then you will need to get them replaced.
Alignment
The second step is to check the tracks with a level to make sure that they are aligned properly. They should slant slightly down toward the back of the garage if they are horizontal tracks and then the roll-up doors, they are going to need to be plumb. Both of them are going to need to be the same height as the garage walls. If they are not aligned correctly, then you are going to need to loosen the screws and bolts that are holding the mounting brackets. It is very important that you do not remove the screws and bolts. Once you have done this, then you will need to recheck the tracks to make sure that they are in the right position and tighten up the screws or bolts.
Clean
The third step is to clean the tracks with a household cleaner that is concentrated. This is the best way to remove the dirt and hardened grease from the tracks. The rollers are going to need to be cleaned thoroughly and they will need to be wiped dry.
Hardware
The fourth step is to check to see if any of the hardware on the tracks is loose and then tighten it if it is needed. If you have doors that swing up, then you will need to check the plates where the spring is mounted to make sure that the screws are tight enough. On the roll-up doors, then the hinges will need to be checked is the sections where the door is held together. If the hinges are damaged, then they are going to need to be corrected. There are two things that you can do if the screw hole is enlarged. The first thing is to replace the screw with a larger one of the same diameter. The second thing is to use a hollow fiber plug that has been dipped in the carpenter’s glue. Then if the wood is cracked at the hinge, then you will need to remove the hinge and fill in any of the cracks with a wood filler.
Mechanism
The fifth step is to make sure that the mechanism for the garage door is at the center of the door. In order to determine the location of the mechanism, you can use a tape measure to figure out the width of the garage door. Half of the distance is going to be the center. On the inside of the door, toward the top, you will need to draw a short vertical line down the center of the door. When you can affix the drawbar at this line.
